The CSA Newsletter is a Web-based publication produced three times per year -- spring, fall, and winter. An Internet distribution list is maintained for those who wish to be notified when Newsletter issues are posted. To subscribe, visit this web page. You will then receive announcements when Newsletter articles are posted. There will be no messages to the list other then those concerning the CSA Newsletter.
The CSA Newsletter provides up-to-date information on the use of computers and digital technologies in the practice of archaeology and architectural history. Articles are intended to assist scholars in their attempts to use computers to generate digital information and in disseminating that digital information. CSA Newsletter articles should also be of interest to graduate students and others who want to know more about the development of information technology in these disciplines.
Unrequested submissions of articles are welcome. Authors will be contacted regarding such submissions as quickly as possible. Submissions are preferred in the form of simple text in an email message but may also be in the form of documents attached to email messages (RTF format only, DOC format attachments will not be opened because of virus potential). Paper manuscripts will not be accepted or returned.
Newsletter articles written by the CSA staff are reviewed internally. Web site reviews written by authors not on the CSA staff are reviewed by the staff and, when required by the subject matter, outside experts.
There is no printed version of the Newsletter as of the beginning of Volume 13 (Spring, 2000 issue). The Web versions of previous issues of the CSA Newsletter were compiled from printed issues. All articles from the printed issues from February, 1995 (Vol. 7 no. 4) through February 1996 (Vol. 8 no. 4) were made available in February of 1996 in HTML form, and all issues thereafter were posted on the Web as they were produced. Selected articles from the of August, 1994, issue (Vol. 7 no. 2) and the November, 1994, issue (Vol. 7 no. 3) were also made available in February of 1996 in HTML form; two further articles from the August, 1990, issue (Vol. 3 no. 2) were put on the Web as HTML documents during November, 1999. In 2006 all issues that had not been fully posted in HTML format were scanned, and the resulting images have been placed on the web so that all articles of all issues are now available on the web. Readers should note, however, that the articles that have only been scanned for presentation cannot be searched for specified text.
Only those articles that are available on the Web in HTML form are listed in the topical indices. Each issue will have a posting date indicated.
Feel free to print any of the CSA Newsletter articles, bearing in mind that the articles are copyrighted.
We plan to keep all electronic versions of the CSA Newsletter available as long as the CSA web site endures. Paper versions of the early Newsletter are maintained at the CSA offices, but archival versions are now those on the web. Citations should normally be of the printed version when they are available since page numbers are then possible.
Reader reactions to newsletter articles have always been welcome, encouraged, and appreciated. However, from December, 2006, forward, we will follow the following formal procedure to encourage additions, corrections, and enhancements to CSA Newsletter articles:
Any reader may comment on an article by sending the comments to the editor of the CSA Newsletter, Harrison (Nick) Eiteljorg, II. For his email address, see our email contacts page.. The reader must identify himself or herself by full name (and position if desired) and provide an email address for contact. The comment will be put into HTML form in consultation with its author and posted. A link to the comment will be placed on the article page. (Links will always be placed in the title areas, below the author line, in the form of an icon with the phrase "CSA Newsletter Commentary.") The name of the reader (and position when supplied) and the date of the comment will be included on the secondary page, as will subsequent comments about the same article (making only one linked page per article as the maximum, no matter how many comments). Illustrations are welcome. The email address of the reader(s) will be available either on the web page or from CSA, at the reader's discretion.
The linked page with comments will present the comments in standard chronological order, not in the reverse order made popular by blogs. The author of the article will be asked to respond to the reader's comments, but the reader's comments will be posted when received and will not have to await the author's response unless the author and reader wish to work together on the comment.
The Editor reserves the right to reject profane, commercial, or unrelated comments.
An example of this new procedure may be found for the article "High Dynamic Range Photography," by Harrison Eiteljorg, II; XIX, 2; Fall, 2006. (http://www.csanet.org/newsletter/fall06/nlf0603.html)
For an index of Web site and CD reviews available on the Web pages of the CSA Newsletter, see the review index. There is also a limited subject index available for articles on the Web.
